It took five days for Quin to wake up properly, to stop looking at me through beer-goggles as Nyx called it. Whenever he was conscious, he'd shoot me a dopey smile and call me his 'Sky Girl' again.

He did this for so long that I was concerned for his mental capacities—or lack of them. Had the Sparrow-sent guard really hurt him? Caused brain damage?

Hawk kept saying that he was fine, that Quin was just needing so much rest after what had happened to him with the stabbing and all the blood loss, but to be so out of it for five days or more seemed ludicrous to me.

When he finally started being normal again, on the following Friday after one of my tormentors had been killed by a bullet to the gut, he woke up, blinked at me sleepily, and murmured, "Hey, sky girl."

I wasn't sure if it was guilt or need that had me glued to his bedside all this time. I hadn't returned to Rachel's place once. Instead, there was a hotel around the corner that the Sinners were camping out in and which we used.

We were with Quin around twenty-three hours a day. Hawk would get cleaned up first while I sat with Quin, then the only time he was without us was when Hawk would return and walk me to our room so I could get showered and changed there. All the while, there were guards outside Quin's door, and they were on a rolling schedule too.

He was a lot safer now the Sinners knew one man wasn't enough to protect me and Quin.

Still, this particular morning, it felt different. He seemed different. Not as dopey or sleepy. His eyes were clearer, his voice less rumble and more murmur.

I shot him a smile, hoping that I wasn't jumping to conclusions, and teased, “It’s about time you woke up, sleepyhead."

He blinked at me, then muttered, "Huh?"

For a second, my hopes sank because I thought he was just the same, hadn't gotten better like I'd thought, but then I realized, like a fool, I'd spoken to him in Ukrainian.

"Sorry," I rumbled, rubbing a hand over my face. "I'm very tired."

He blinked again then whispered hoarsely, "You need to get some rest."

I yawned. "I do."

I made no move to leave though, and that had nothing to do with the fact that I was the only one in the room and that Hawk had gone for a shower.

Putting down the romance novel Quin had bought me and which Indy had brought over during her last visit, I got to my feet and handed him a full glass of water.

Watching as he downed that then another, and munched through the Jell-O cup like it was a beautiful dessert, I told him, "Me and Hawk haven't left you since the attack. Well, only to shower."

Quin tipped his head to the side. "Why?"

I didn't have an answer, not a logical or a rational one at least. It was easier to be trite,
